Golf Solitaire Strategy & Tips

A practical strategy guide for Golf Solitaire: check every column before drawing, clear the deepest columns first, remember a chain moves both up and down in rank, and save the stock for when you are truly stuck.

The core idea

Read the whole board before you touch the stock

Almost every strong Golf Solitaire habit comes down to one idea: the stock is a scarce, one-time resource, and the tableau usually has more matches available than it first appears. Slow down, check every column, and chain as far as the board lets you before turning a single stock card.

  • 01

Scan every column before you draw

The stock only runs once — sixteen cards, sixteen chances. Before turning it, check all seven column tops against the foundation. A match you missed costs nothing to find; a stock card burned by mistake is gone for the game.

  • 02

    Favor the deepest columns first

A column with four cards still under its top card is four moves from being useful. A column with one is nearly done. When two columns both offer a legal play, clear from the deeper one to open more future options sooner.

  • 03

    Remember rank runs both ways

After playing a 6 onto a 7, you can immediately follow with a 5, then a 4, walking the same numbers down or back up as long as a column keeps matching. New players often play one card and stop without checking for the next link.

  • 04

Chase the longest chain you can see

Every card played without touching the stock raises the chain bonus. Before making an obvious match, glance one card ahead — does this play open a second match, or does a different column keep the chain alive longer?

  • 05

    Treat corner cards with care

In Classic mode, an Ace only connects to a 2 and a King only to a Queen — plan a path through those ranks early rather than stranding an Ace or King under cards that never reach it. In Relaxed mode this pressure eases since they can connect directly.

  • 06

Do not chase the nearest match blindly

The easiest card to see is not always the best one to play. A card that unlocks two more columns beats a card that only clears itself, even if the second option is one glance further away.

  • 07

    Use undo to test lines

Undo here is unlimited and costs nothing. Try a line, see what it opens up, and take it back if the board did not improve. Golf rewards seeing two or three moves ahead more than any other habit.

By ruleset

How the approach shifts

The habits above apply to both rulesets. What changes is how much room for error you have — see the Classic vs Relaxed section of the guide.

  • On Classic

Ace and King never connect, so plan how you will clear both corners through their neighboring ranks. Expect a tighter game with a lower average win rate.

  • On Relaxed

Ace and King "turn the corner" and connect directly, opening more lines and noticeably raising how often a deal clears. It is the friendlier place to build a long streak.

  • When you are stuck

If no column matches and the stock is spent, the deal is over — start a new one. Getting stuck is normal in Golf Solitaire and not a sign you played badly; some deals genuinely have no path to clearing.
